Aruba: A Caribbean paradise Discover the island of dreams

Aruba, a small island in the Caribbean, is a dream destination for those who love white sandy beaches, bright sunshine, breathtaking landscapes and warm people. The island is not only a great holiday destination, but also a place with an impressive airport, Queen Beatrix International Airport.

Queen Beatrix International Airport

Queen Beatrix International Airport is the only airport in Aruba and serves as a hub for the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao). Aruba Air, the national airline of the ABC Islands, connects the islands.

The airport is named after the former Queen of the Netherlands, Beatrix, and receives millions of tourists from all over the world every year. Most visitors come from the United States and the Netherlands. KLM operates daily flights from the Netherlands using an Airbus A330. British operators TUI and Thomas Cook also fly seasonally with Thomson Dreamliners or A330 aircraft from Gatwick or Stockholm to Aruba.

Curacao: The largest island of the ABC Islands

Curaçao, the largest of the three ABC islands, has the region's largest airport and the longest runway in the Leeward and Windward Islands. This long runway allows the airport to receive large widebody jets from Amsterdam every day. KLM offers regular flights, as well as TUI jets from Brussels and Amsterdam. Air Belgium also flies to and from Brussels with Airbus A330-900 Neo aircraft.

In addition to European visitors, many tourists come from the USA and Canada. American Airlines, JetBlue, United, Air Canada, Sunwing, WestJet and other airlines have been offering flights to Curacao for decades.

Many airlines from the Caribbean, Central and South America also fly to Curacao, such as Air Antilles, Air Century, Arajet, Avianca, Caribbean Airlines, Copa Airlines, FlyAllways, SARPA, SkyHigh and Wingo.

The Netherlands Antilles has several local airlines, including JetAir Caribbean, Divi Divi Air and EZ Air, which offer domestic flights and some international connections to Bogotá, Medellín and Santo Domingo. At the airport are still some aircraft of the now dissolved island Air (MD80) to be seen, some of them in a decayed state.

Freight planes are irregular visitors, but AerCaribe offers an almost daily flight. DHL Aero Expresso flies twice a day, Ameriflight from Monday to Friday and Amerijet International with Boeing 757 once a week on Mondays. Aerosucre Cargo with Boeing 727 also flies to Curacao almost daily and has replaced the LAS Cargo flights (in November 2022).

The US military is present with a FOL (Forward Operating Location). Sometimes a few C-135 or E-3 aircraft can be seen. Aircraft from the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Coast Guard also fly in regularly.

There is free Wi-Fi in the terminal and for tourists, the TUI office next to the arrivals hall offers tourist SIM cards (3GB for $30 – valid for 1 month).

Aruba: A fascinating destination

Aruba, one of the three largest islands (the others being Curaçao and Bonaire), separated from the Federation in January 1986 to form its own government. In 1990, Aruba requested and received from the Netherlands the repeal of the agreement, which should have granted independence in 1996. Aruba remains under Dutch protection and is unofficially considered an integral part of the Antilles group. The islands are a fascinating blend of Afro-Spanish-Dutch culture – a melting pot of sights, people and languages. The hinterland is rich in history and natural wonders that attract more tourists every year.

Aruba: A paradise for sun worshippers and water sports enthusiasts

Aruba is known for its white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and year-round sunny weather. The beaches of Palm Beach, Eagle Beach and Arikok Beach are particularly popular with tourists. In addition to the beaches, Aruba also offers a variety of water sports, such as diving, snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Aruba: Culture and history

The capital of Aruba is Oranjestad. Here you will find many historic buildings, including Fort Zoutman, the House of Culture and the Parliament. The city of San Nicolas, known for its colorful houses and Nelson Mandela Park, is also worth a visit.

Aruba has a long history dating back to the Arawak Indians. The island was later colonized by the Spanish and then by the Dutch. These different cultures have shaped Aruba and can be seen today in architecture, music, language and cuisine.

Aruba: A culinary experience

Aruban cuisine is a mix of different influences, including Caribbean, Dutch and Spanish elements. Typical Aruban dishes include keshi yena, a stuffed cheesecake, pastechi, fried dumplings with various fillings, and funchi, a corn porridge.

Aruba: A sustainable destination

Aruba is aware of its responsibility for the environment and has taken various sustainability measures. For example, solar and wind energy are used to meet the island's energy needs. There are also various recycling programmes and initiatives to protect the environment.

Here you can explore cacti forests, caves with Native American rock carvings and the ruins of an ancient gold mine. The California lighthouse in the north of the island is also worth a visit. From here you have a breathtaking view over the island and the sea.
