Porto: A paradise for explorers and aviation enthusiasts

Porto, Portugal's second largest city, enchants with its charm, medieval alleys and impressive bridge. But Porto has much more to offer than just port wine, which gave the city its name.

The versatility of Porto

Nestled in the northwest of the country, Porto is closer to the Spanish region of Galicia than to Lisbon. This proximity gives the city a special atmosphere that complements its historical and artistic charms.

The old town of Ribeira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, impresses with its authenticity. Here you will find magnificent examples of the Portuguese Azulejo tradition, ornate ceramic tiles that adorn buildings. The medieval streets wind uphill and downhill, creating a unique backdrop.

In addition to the historical charm, Porto also shows its modern side. The Casa da Música, an architectural masterpiece by Rem Koolhaas, and the futuristic Museu de Arte Contemporânea by Álvaro Siza Vieira are impressive examples of the city's progressive architecture.

Porto Airport (OPO): A hub for travellers

PortoAirport (OPO) has become an important hub, offering a growing number of connections within Europe, Africa and the Americas. It serves as a base for TAP Air Portugal, easyJet and Ryanair and has a busy DHL freight terminal.

The airport has a runway (17/35) and offers few opportunities for aircraft observers. However, passengers have a good view of the apron as soon as they are in the departure hall.

How to get to the airport

Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is located just 11 km northwest of Porto city centre and is easily accessible.

  • By car: From the city centre, follow the A28 north to the A41 junction and then turn east onto the A41. Take exit 2 and follow the road to the airport.

  • By bus: Regular bus services (lines 601, 602, 604 and 3M) run between the airport and the city centre. A one-way trip costs €1.85.

  • By shuttle: Shuttle services to central Porto are provided by Goin' Porto and Airport Shuttle, while Get Bus offers services to Guimarães and Braga.

  • By taxi: Taxis are available 24 hours a day in front of the arrivals area.

  • By metro: The purple line of the Metro do Porto serves the airport from 06:00 to 01:00. The journey to the city centre takes about 30 minutes.

Airport facilities

Porto Airport offers a variety of facilities for travelers:

  • Money: Bank, currency exchange and ATMs

  • Food and drink: Cafés, restaurants, ice cream parlor and beer bar

  • Shopping: Fashion, electronics, gift and book stores as well as duty-free shops

Porto: A city that inspires

Porto is a city that delights both history buffs and aviation enthusiasts alike. The airport offers easy access to the city and numerous options for travelers. Explore the historic old town, enjoy the view from the bridges and be impressed by the modern architecture. And of course, you should definitely try a glass of port wine to round off your visit to Porto.

Porto Alegre Airport (POA): Gateway to the South of Brazil

Salgado FilhoAirport (POA) in Porto Alegre, the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, is an important transport hub for the south of Brazil. Named after a prominent politician who was also Minister of Brazilian Aviation, this airport has a long history. In the 1920s, it was the home base of Varig, once Brazil's largest airline.

Airport development and flight connections

The airport has a single runway that is used intensively. It was privatised in 2016 and is now operated by FRAPORT, Germany. Extensive investments are planned in the expansion of the runway and the construction of new terminals. There are currently two terminals that handled around 8.5 million passengers and 80,000 flight movements last year.

From Porto Alegre there are international flights to Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Lima, Rosario, Cordoba, Panama City and Lisbon. Brazil's three major airlines share traffic almost evenly, with Azul Airlines having a slight lead. Air traffic at the airport is constant throughout the day without peak times. The airport also receives non-scheduled cargo planes, so with a bit of luck you can see, for example, a DC-10 of the Bolivian airline TAB.

Aircraft observation in Porto Alegre

For aircraft observers, the airport offers good viewpoints, but two of them are visible through glass from Terminals 1 and 2. The most popular place for locals is the spot at head 11. Other possible locations were not recommended by local spotters due to safety concerns.

Porto Seguro Airport (BPS): Paradise for beach lovers and spotters

Porto Seguro in northeastern Brazil is known for its beautiful beaches and year-round sunny weather. The city's airport (BPS) mainly serves charter flights from various Brazilian and South American cities, as well as numerous general aviation and business aviation flights. Especially in the holiday months (July-December-January), business aviation is a major attraction for spotters at this airport, which has a 2000-meter-long and 45-meter-wide runway.

The main airlines are the major Brazilian companies (GOL, AZUL, LATAM, Voepass), but the main attraction are the charter flights. The tour operator CVC alone has already booked 290 flights to Porto Seguro for the next few months. Taking pictures at the airport is very easy as the fences are low (except for location 3). The sun is almost always shining and the airport is very close to the city.

conclusion

Whether you want to explore the vibrant metropolis of Porto Alegre, discover the historic streets of Porto or soak up the sun on the beaches of Porto Seguro, the airports in Porto (OPO), Porto Alegre (POA) and Porto Seguro (BPS) offer you a variety of ways to reach these fascinating destinations.

For aviation enthusiasts, the airports in Porto Alegre and Porto Seguro are particularly attractive. Here you can observe a variety of aircraft, from modern commercial aircraft to rare cargo aircraft. Whether you are an experienced spotter or just curious, the airports in Porto, Porto Alegre and Porto Seguro offer you unique insights into the world of aviation.
