Lithuanian travellers now have another attractive destination in Southern Europe – direct flights from Vilnius to Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, will commence at the start of June.

The new route is operated by Wizz Air, with flights running twice a week. This is the first time that Vilnius and Podgorica have been connected by regular direct flights, making travel to one of Europe’s fastest-growing tourist destinations much simpler and more convenient.

The new route not only offers the chance to reach Montenegro’s capital quickly, but also to explore the whole country – from the Adriatic coast to the impressive mountain ranges, national parks and historic towns. A journey that previously often required transfers at European airports now takes just around 2 hours and 25 minutes.

Why is this news important for Lithuanian travellers?

In recent years, Montenegro has become one of the most sought-after holiday destinations in Europe. Although the country is small, it boasts an incredible diversity of nature and culture. Many travellers call it ‘miniature Europe’, as it offers both the charm of the Mediterranean coast and the rugged mountain landscapes of the Alps.

Until now, trips to Montenegro for Lithuanians usually involved changing flights in Warsaw, Vienna, Frankfurt or other European cities. A direct route from Vilnius not only saves time but also reduces travel stress, particularly for families with children or those who enjoy short weekend getaways.

Vilnius Airport describes this route as one of the most important new destinations for the summer season. Together with other new flights, it strengthens Lithuania’s connections with Southern Europe and offers more choice for both tourists and business travellers.

Podgorica – more than just a capital

Although for many tourists Podgorica is merely the first stop on a tour of Montenegro, the city has plenty to offer in its own right.
Unlike the tourist-packed coastal resorts, Podgorica offers a glimpse into the country’s authentic daily life. It is full of cosy cafés, local restaurants, parks and historical sites. The city is a blend of influences from the Ottoman Empire, Yugoslavia and modern Europe.

One of the city’s most famous landmarks is the Millennium Bridge, which connects different parts of the city. It is also worth visiting the old town of Stara Varoš, which features surviving fragments of Ottoman-era architecture, and King Nikola’s Palace, a reminder of the history of the Montenegrin monarchy.

Podgorica often serves as an excellent base for further travel around the country. From here, you can reach both the mountains and the coast in just an hour or two.

The Pearl of the Adriatic – the Montenegrin Coast

Most tourists visit Montenegro for its stunning coastline. It takes about an hour to drive from Podgorica to the Adriatic Sea.

One of the country’s most famous towns is Kotor. The medieval old town and the stunning Bay of Kotor are often compared to the fjords of Norway. This UNESCO-protected town charms visitors with its narrow streets, ancient churches and mountain backdrop.

No less popular is the resort of Budva, renowned for its beaches, lively nightlife and historic old town. Holidaymakers from all over Europe flock here.

Another symbol of Montenegro is the island of Sveti Stefan. This picturesque peninsula often features on the country’s tourism posters and is one of the most photographed sites in the Balkans.

A paradise for active holidaymakers

Montenegro is increasingly being discovered not only by beach lovers but also by active tourism enthusiasts.

In the north of the country lies Durmitor National Park, famous for its mountains, glacial lakes and impressive hiking trails. Here you can go hiking, cycling or simply enjoy the breathtaking views.

Adventure seekers are drawn to the Tara River Canyon – one of the deepest in Europe. This spot is particularly popular among rafting and adrenaline enthusiasts.

Another unique spot is Lake Skadar, the largest in the Balkans. It is a true paradise for birdwatchers and nature photographers. The lake is renowned for its biodiversity and traditional fishing villages.

Why choose Montenegro for the summer of 2026?

Although countries such as Italy, Spain and Greece have long been favourite holiday destinations for Lithuanians, Montenegro offers a slightly different experience.

Firstly, you can still experience a more authentic Balkan atmosphere here. Many towns have retained their traditional character, and mass tourism has not yet significantly altered the local way of life.

Secondly, Montenegro remains quite competitive in terms of prices. Prices for restaurants, accommodation and transport are often lower than in most Western European resorts.

Thirdly, the country’s small size means you can see a great deal in a single trip. You can swim in the Adriatic Sea in the morning and admire the mountain views in the evening.

A new chapter for tourism in Lithuania and Montenegro

Direct flights between Vilnius and Podgorica are not just a more convenient transport option for tourists. They also strengthen economic, cultural and business ties between Lithuania and Montenegro.

During the summer aviation season, the route will operate twice a week, allowing travellers to easily plan both short weekend breaks and longer holidays.

Tourism experts predict that the new route will contribute to the growing interest among Lithuanians in the Balkan region. Montenegro has for some time been cited as one of the fastest-growing European destinations, and direct flights from Vilnius could further strengthen this trend.

Summary

Direct flights from Vilnius to Podgorica mark an important step in expanding Lithuania’s air transport network. From now on, Montenegro is more accessible and easier to reach than ever before. In just over two hours, Lithuanians can find themselves in a country where mountains, the sea, history and authentic Balkan culture come together.

For those seeking new experiences, lesser-known corners of Europe and stunning natural beauty, Montenegro could be one of the standout discoveries of the summer of 2026. The new direct route from Vilnius offers a great opportunity to see this for yourself.
