Why is the Riga–Manchester route becoming one of the most important in Baltic aviation?

One of the most striking examples is Manchester. Although at first glance it may seem like just another route between Latvia and the United Kingdom, its significance is in fact much greater. It is not only changing travel habits but also demonstrating how aviation across the entire Baltic region is developing.

Manchester has long since ceased to be merely a football capital. It is one of the United Kingdom’s most important economic centres, home to more than half a million people, whilst the Greater Manchester conurbation, comprising the city and its surrounding towns, has a population of nearly three million. The city is one of the country’s leading centres for finance, technology, higher education and logistics. For this reason, air links to Manchester are important not only for tourists but also for business.

This is precisely why Latvia’s national airline, airBaltic, decided a few years ago to include Manchester in its route network. Flights began using modern Airbus A220-300 aircraft – some of the most advanced narrow-body passenger aircraft in the world. These aircraft feature lower fuel consumption, a quieter cabin and greater passenger comfort than previous-generation aircraft. It is the A220 family that has become one of airBaltic’s key competitive advantages in the European market.

Interestingly, airBaltic is today one of the few European airlines operating almost exclusively a single type of passenger aircraft. This approach helps to reduce costs relating to pilot training, maintenance and spare parts. For passengers, this means they can expect a consistent travel experience on almost all of the airline’s routes – from seat layout to cabin comfort.

The flight between Riga and Manchester takes around three hours. This duration makes the route particularly attractive for weekend trips or short business trips. Travellers no longer need to opt for a long lay-over in Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Copenhagen – a direct flight saves a considerable amount of time.

However, the real value of this route lies not in Manchester itself. The city is one of the UK’s largest transport hubs. Liverpool can be reached by train in just an hour; the journey to Leeds or Sheffield takes a little longer, whilst Edinburgh is also easily accessible within a few hours. This means that a single direct flight opens the door to virtually the whole of northern England and the southern part of Scotland.

This route is also becoming increasingly popular with Lithuanian travellers. Although Lithuania has a fair number of direct flights to the United Kingdom, they are mostly to London, Luton or Stansted. Meanwhile, destinations in northern England are still not served as extensively. For this reason, many Lithuanians choose to fly from Riga, which is just a few hours’ drive from northern Lithuania.

Riga Airport is, in general, becoming one of the most important aviation hubs in the Baltic region. It offers more than eighty direct routes to destinations in Europe, Scandinavia and the Middle East. Thanks to this extensive network, passengers from Lithuania are increasingly choosing Riga not only as a departure point but also as a convenient transfer hub.

Another interesting aspect is competition. In recent years, low-cost airlines have also started operating on the route between Riga and Manchester. This means that passengers can now choose between different prices, flight times and levels of service. Competition usually leads to lower ticket prices and more frequent flights, which benefits the whole region.

However, airBaltic does not compete on price alone on this route. The airline focuses on passengers who value reliability, connecting flights and convenient timetables. Upon arrival in Riga, passengers can connect to dozens of other destinations on the same day – from Helsinki to Tbilisi, and from Barcelona to the Dubai region. This strategy is enabling Riga to gradually compete with much larger European airports.

Looking at the bigger picture, the Manchester route is just one part of a wider strategy. airBaltic already flies to more than eighty destinations and is planning further expansion. Despite the financial challenges the company has faced due to engine supply issues, global geopolitical events and rising operating costs, the Latvian government is committed to maintaining Riga as the airline’s main hub. Negotiations are currently underway to secure a strategic investor, which should help ensure the airline’s long-term development.

Why is this important for Lithuania? The answer is simple. The stronger Riga Airport and the airBaltic network are, the more options there are for travellers from all the Baltic states. Some destinations not yet served from Vilnius or Kaunas are already accessible from Riga. This fosters competition between airports, improves connectivity and, in the long run, contributes to the economic growth of the entire region.

Although the Manchester route may not seem as exotic as flights to Canada or the Far East, it is precisely such routes that often form the backbone of the aviation system. They generate a steady flow of passengers, serving business travellers, students, tourists and the Lithuanian and Latvian communities from the UK living in the Baltic states. For this reason, Riga–Manchester is currently one of airBaltic’s most strategically important routes.

In the future, the importance of this route may grow even further. If airBaltic successfully implements its expansion plans and maintains Riga as the region’s main hub, Manchester could become not only a popular destination for travellers, but also one of the most important links between the Baltic states and the north of the United Kingdom. This means that passengers from both Lithuania and Latvia will have even more opportunities to choose fast, convenient and competitively priced journeys.
